Hotel Motel Fire Safety
- Choose a hotel that’s protected by smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system.
- Read and become familiar with the escape plan posted in your room and in the hallway near your room.
- Count the doors between your room and the nearest stairs or exits. You may need to find them in the dark if there’s a need to escape.
- If exits are locked or blocked, report it to the manager and the fire department.
- Exits should be usable, and lead to the outside of the building
- Find the fire alarm manual pull station nearest your room. If there’s a fire, sound the alarm and leave the building, then call the fire department.
- Prior to going to bed, keep your room key, flashlight and shoes where they’ll be easy to reach during an emergency.
- If you hear the fire alarm leave the building immediately.
- Always take your key with you so if you can’t exit the building you can return to your room.
- If you discover a fire: sound the alarm, leave the building, close the doors behind you and call the fire department.
- Never take the elevator during a fire, ALWAYS use the stairs.
- Test doors before you open them. There may be fire on the other side. Feel the door with the back of your hand, test the doorknobs and around the cracks for heat. If the door is hot or warm use a different exit or stay in your room if you cannot exit the building safely.
- If you are in a area where there is smoke crawl low under the smoke to your exit.
- If you are trapped, call the fire department. Calmly inform the dispatcher of your hotel and location. Shut fans and air conditioners off. Stuff towels, sheets or clothing in the crack under the door. Close the window if smoke comes into the room. Do not break the window, stay at the window and signal the fire department by waving a cloth or flashlight.
