Escape Plans

Escape Plans

  • Everyone should have a plan of escape when a fire happens.
  • If you hear the smoke alarm or fire alarm, leave immediately.
  • Draw a floor plan of each level of your home.
  • Show two ways out of each room.
  • Everyone should be able to unlock and open windows in the home.
  • Security bars should have a quick-release device.
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator in a multi-story building.
  • All exits should not be blocked.
  • Close the doors behind you to create a barrier from the fire. An opened door can spread the fire and smoke.
  • Crawl low under smoke, keeping your head near the floor where the air is cleanest.
  • Test the doors and doorknobs with the back of your hand. If it is warm you need to go to your second exit.
  • Agree on an outside meeting place in front of your home where everyone in the family will gather after they are out.
  • Once you are out, stay out. Never go back inside a burning building for any reasons at all.
  • Practice your fire drill at least once a year. Use different exits each time you practice.
  • Provide alternatives or special aids for anyone with disabilities.
